Background
Nigeria is located in the west
coast of Africa and is the most populous nation
in Africa. Nigeria was a British colony and protectorate
until its independence in 1960. Most Nigerians
earn their livelihood by farming, fishing, or
herding. Since the late 1960s, profits from Nigeria's
oil industry have enabled this nation to use its
wealth to develop new industries, improve its
educational system, and modernize its agriculture.
However, the civil war in late 1960s caused widespread
death and destruction in southeastern Nigeria.
Beginning in 1970, the government initiated reconstruction
and relief programs to overcome the effects of
the war. After several military governments in
Nigeria, since 1999, ethnic, religious, and political
tensions in Nigeria have sparked several outbreaks
of violence in which thousands of people have
died.
Supporting the Pro-Health
International
Pro-Health International, which
was established in 1990, is a non-profit organization
that provides health care and hope to the poor
and less privileged in rural areas of West Africa
at little or no cost to the recipients. According
to the January 2002 report from Pro-Health International,
almost 54,000 patients have been treated and more
than 2,000 had surgery. In addition, 992 had dental
surgery, 260 had eye surgery and 4,500 received
free eye glasses.
In 2002, we provided funds for
two dental chairs and 4 pulse oximeters used to monitor surgery patients.
