Background

Although people have been living in what is now Mozambique since around 4000 B.C., the current borders of Mozambique have been established in 1891 under the colonial rule of Portugal. Mozambique became independent on June 25, 1975, which was followed by the exodus of most of the Portuguese. Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world and a majority of its population remains illiterate. In the 1980's and early 1990's, droughts and the disruption resulting from the war with guerillas caused food shortages that led to malnutrition and starvation for millions of people. In 2000, Cyclone Eline and heavy rains struck Mozambique, killing 700 people and leaving about 500,000 people homeless.
